The bad news was confirmed around the basins of Budapest (Hungary). After forfeiting Tuesday’s 100-meter freestyle semi-final, American Caeleb Dressel has decided to put away his swimsuit for good for these world championships, as announced by the the American swimming federation, Wednesday, June 2.

“After discussions with Caeleb, his coaches and the medical staff, the decision was made to withdraw him from the world championships”said the press release from USA Swimming on Wednesday. “Our priority is and always will be the health of our athletes and we will continue to give Caeleb the support he needs to recover quickly.”

With two titles in his pocket during his first two disputed finals, in the 50 meter butterfly and in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay, it is the star of world men’s swimming who is retiring. Dressel, 25, was also the big favorite to win the 100 meter freestyle or the 50 meter freestyle.

The misfortune of some will necessarily make the happiness of others: Maxime Grousset will compete in the final of the queen race, Wednesday, without the star. Florent Manaudou, for his part, will have one more chance to shine on the famous straight line, from Thursday, in the Duna Arena in Budapest.
