6 tech gifts everyone you love will know how to use without asking for help

Are you looking for Christmas gifts to give to relatives or friends who are uncomfortable with anything related to computers near or far? Here are some tech products that are as practical as they are easy to use.

If you read Numerama regularly, you may be the “IT hotline” of your family or circle of friends: the person to call when an unexpected pop-up appears or the one to whom it is. we send a message as soon as there is a problem with the WiFi.

If so, but still want to bring your loved ones into the 21st century, here’s a list of tech gifts you can give to those less computer-savvy.

Un Chromecast

Google’s dongle is one of the less risky tech giveaways to give to your tech-overwhelmed cousin or your aunt who doesn’t want to bother setting up anything.

The accessory is amazingly simple. You plug it into an HDMI port on your TV, connect it to WiFi and… that’s it. Once the device is installed, all compatible apps will display a small Chromecast icon to switch video content from their phone to the TV screen.

The only difficulty is in the connection phase, but this is easily done between two pieces of logs, with a smartphone in hand. Then the gadget will make its life without asking for attention.

The Chromecast is now available in two versions: one sold at 30 euros which is only used to receive the video files to play them on the TV, and a model with Google TV sold for 50 euros, which is equipped with an interface and a remote control to surf Netflix or YouTube without needing your phone.

A mouse and a keyboard

It’s hard to get any simpler than these two computer accessories. Even those who are not tech-savvy understand the basic operation of these devices.

Not everyone has an external keyboard and mouse kit, however. Yet these gadgets are precious, especially with the explosion of teleworking due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Rather than exhausting yourself scrolling on your laptop’s little touchpad, why not rediscover the joys of a real mouse wheel. Is your computer keyboard too soft or not ergonomic enough? There are dozens of accessories that will do the job better and offer impeccable working comfort.

When it comes to high-end accessories, we cannot recommend enough MX Master 3 mouse and the MX Keys keyboard from Logitech, both sold for around 100 euros. They connect with a single, very small USB dongle (or via Bluetooth) and offer comfortable typing and navigation on the go.

For less expensive gifts, you can also opt for the mouse Logitech MX Anywhere 2 vendue 30 euros and the K400 Plus sold between 20 and 30 euros. These devices also use the “Unifying” dongle which simplifies connection. There is also an “ergonomic” model sold for 90 euros which helps reduce muscle tension during long surf sessions.

A bluetooth headset

If you know someone who still uses the headphones that came in their smartphone box and you want to give them a simple gift that could make their life easier, then why not give them a Bluetooth headset?

Most headsets work in a very simple way: after a first pairing, the headset should automatically connect to the designated device as soon as it is switched on. With a few clicks of a button, it is possible to enjoy your music in good conditions and without the hassle.

If you can afford it, then the best products to buy in late 2021 are arguably Sony’s Sony WH-1000XM4 sold for around 300 euros, Where Apple’s Airpods Max sold for around 600 euros. If you are looking for a more affordable model, then the Seinheiser HD 450BT sold at 150 euros will suit better.

A phone charger

It’s hard to get any simpler as a gift than a phone charger. No screen, no button, no remote, just plug in your phone. And if you think a charger is a second-rate giveaway, think again, there’s been quite a bit of innovation in the field and chargers have become real tech gadgets.

Gallium nitride (GaN) chargers are notably much more efficient than the charging bricks found in most phones. They are also more compact and generally have enough power to charge a smartphone or an ultraportable computer.

Belkin notably offers a 60-watt GaN charger that is able to charge a smartphone or a MacBook Air without problem (or any computer rechargeable via USB-C). This model is sold around 50 euros. If you need even more power, Apple offers a GaN charger amounting to 140 watts for 100 and a few euros.

A charger is not a flashy present, but it is a terribly practical gift for those who are tired of having to take 3 different chargers on board every weekend.

An iPad

If you have the budget, the iPad can be a great gift for those around you who aren’t tech-savvy. Apple’s tablet is indeed amazingly simple and can do almost as well, if not better, than a computer in everyday computing tasks.

Apple’s logic here is to put only one button on the front of the tablet and to separate each task within a well-defined app. A strategy that greatly simplifies uses.

The Apple’s first-price tablet, however, already costs around 390 euros. If you can go upmarket, the 2020 iPad Air is an almost flawless product at 600 euros. Our guide to Apple iPads will allow you to compare them.

A subscription to a SVOD service

There is hardly a technological gift easier than a digital gift. And in the field, the most secure is a subscription to an SVOD service. These platforms offer a very wide selection of movies or series to watch anytime.

Moreover, there is no shortage of choice. Canal +, Netflix, Salto, Disney +, Apple TV +, Amazon Prime Video, OCS. All of them have an extensive catalog and interesting exclusives for movie buffs or fans of the series.
