77ᵉ UN GA: Lamamra conducts intense diplomatic activity

On the sidelines of the high-level work of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly (GA), the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra, carried out intense diplomatic activity in New York (United States), at the head of an imposing delegation.

Yesterday, the Head of Algerian diplomacy met the head of the American State Department, in charge of Middle Eastern Affairs, Barbara Leaf. During this meeting, the two diplomats discussed Algerian-American cooperation as well as regional stability. In addition, Ramtane Lamamra and Barbara Leaf discussed peace and the holding of the next Arab League Summit in Algiers.

In addition, the two parties discussed the latest developments in the international situation dominated in particular by the conflict in Ukraine, the Palestinian question, the Libyan crisis as well as the situation in the Sahel.

For her part, the head of the American State Department, in charge of Near East Affairs, Barbara Leaf, described Algeria as a “solid” partner for peace and stability in the region and the African continent. And this, by emphasizing “the efforts of Algeria at the Arab and African level in the service of the objectives of peace and stability”.

In New York, Lamamra speaks with several of his counterparts

In the same vein, it should be recalled that yesterday in New York, the Foreign Minister held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Malta, Saint Lucia, Germany, Bulgaria and Croatia.

These meetings focused on bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them. Moreover, they constituted an opportunity to reaffirm Algeria’s positions and its objectivity with regard to developments at the regional and international levels.

On the sidelines of his trip to New York, the Head of Algerian diplomacy also held a working session with the Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit. In the same vein, remember that Algeria will host the Arab League Summit in Algiers on 1 and 2 November.

At UN headquarters, Lamamra highlights Algeria’s commitment to respect its principles

At the head of a large delegation, Minister Ramtane Lamamra proceeded, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, to the launch of the campaign to promote Algeria’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the period 2024-2025.

Thus, the Head of Algerian diplomacy shed light on Algeria’s readiness to make a qualitative contribution to the activities of the UN Security Council and highlighted its commitment to respect its principles and positions based on a objective vision for the peaceful settlement of crises.

Moreover, and at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, the Foreign Minister took part yesterday in the ministerial meeting of the Group of Friends of the Global Initiative for Development.

Launched in 2021 by the Chinese President on the sidelines of the epidemic context linked to Covid-19, this initiative aims to strengthen the mobilization of the international community to accelerate the implementation of the United Nations Development Agenda .

To this end, Minister Ramtane Lamamra called for the strengthening of international cooperation to accelerate the achievement of sustainable development goals. Particularly in the face of rising geopolitical tensions and the worsening socio-economic repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic that international relations are currently going through.
