The new creation of the authors of Darkwhich prances in the top of Netflix for a few days, is accused of plagiarism by a Brazilian comic book author.
“I’m in shock.” It is with these words that Brazilian cartoonist Mary Cagnin described on Twitter her state of mind after discovering that her comic Black Silencereleased in 2016, was plagiarized from the new Netflix series 1899which is at the top of the platform’s content.
“It’s all there. The Black Pyramid. The dead inside the ship/ship. The multinational crew. The seemingly strange and unexplained things”, lists the designer, before specifying that the series takes up “subtle details of the plot, such as the characters’ personal dramas, including their mysterious deaths.”
“Black Silence is a short work, almost a short story. It’s very easy, in 12 hours of series, to dilute all these ‘references’, but the essence of what I created is there”, she insists.
“I cried a lot”
According to Mary Cagnin, Netflix, as well as Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, the creators of the series, could have discovered her comic in 2017, when she was invited by the Brazilian Embassy to participate in the Book Fair of Gothenburg.
“I participated in panels and distributed the comic Black Silence to countless publishers and people in the industry. It is not difficult to imagine that my work could have waited for them in this way”, she explains, indicating that she had brought a version translated into English to the fair.
The designer says she is broken by this plagiarism: “I cried a lot. My dream has always been to be recognized for my work on a national and international scale. And seeing such a thing happen really breaks my heart. We know that in Brazil we have few opportunities to show our work and be recognized for it.”
Because for Mary Cagnin, it is also a question of national pride: “We cannot let this kind of contempt pass. There have been countless cases where individuals have copied us in films, series and songs This is what happened with Life of Piwhich was copied from a Brazilian book.” The creators of 1899 have yet to respond to his accusations.
