A person dies of hunger in the world every four seconds

One person in the world currently dies of hunger every four seconds, according to the harshest estimates of more than two hundred NGOs, who are calling on world leaders meeting in New York “to act to end the global hunger crisis”.

“In Africa, we fear both disease and famine”

“Organizations from 75 countries have signed an open letter to express their outrage at the explosion in the number of hungry people and to make recommendations, as 345 million people worldwide suffer from acute hunger, a number that has more than doubled since 2019”underline these 238 organizations in a press release.

This open letter is published on the occasion of the start of the annual meeting of the UN General Assembly, where a large number of political leaders but also representatives of civil society gather for a week for what is considered to be the most important diplomatic gathering in the world.

“It is about the injustice of all humanity”

“It is inadmissible that with all the agricultural technology […] today we were still talking about famine in the 21ste century “, said Mohanna Ahmed Ali Eljabaly of the Yemen Family Care Association, one of the signatories of the letter. And to add: “It is not about a country or a continent and hunger never has a single cause. It is about the injustice of all humanity. »

Global warming, Covid-19, political context… In Madagascar, a dramatic famine with several factors

The signatories of the open letter detailed their method of calculation in a footnote. They draw on figures from the latest report in September from the Global Food Crises Network, created in 2016 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Food Program (WFP), the European Union and NGOs.
