Accident on the Kö: Several injured in an accident at the Düsseldorf Christmas market

An 84-year-old driver injured several Christmas market visitors in Düsseldorf. The police do not assume a willful act.

There was a car accident on the Düsseldorf shopping mile Königsallee not far from the Christmas market with several injuries. An 84-year-old lost control of his car early Tuesday evening and then drove into parked e-scooters, a police spokesman said.

An ambulance from the city of Düsseldorf’s emergency services had reported to the fire brigade’s control center on Tuesday evening around 6 p.m. that there had been a traffic accident involving a car that had driven into a crowd on Königsallee. As a result of this message, the control center employee alerted a large number of emergency services from the fire brigade and rescue service, according to the fire brigade’s deployment report.

Two of the injured were initially life-threatening

When the first rescue workers arrived on site four minutes later, the following picture presented itself: An SUV had touched several cars and parked e-scooters and then came to a standstill on the side of the road in a group of people. The force of the impact lifted the car onto the roadside bollards.

Two pedestrians from the crowd were seriously injured in the accident and were initially in mortal danger, according to fire department spokesman Simon Janßen. The condition of the seriously injured was stabilized in the hospital in the evening.

Another person from the crowd and the driver of one of the vehicles touched suffered minor injuries. The 84-year-old driver of the accident car and his passenger were slightly injured in the accident and suffered a shock.

Police assume an accident and suspect human error

The accident happened not far from the Christmas market. The cause is unclear, but human error is assumed, the police spokesman said. “It’s not an attack.” Diffuse lighting conditions and the drizzle may have played a role.

The ceremonial switching on of the light dome over the Kö-Graben planned for the evening was canceled after the accident. (mawo with dpa)
