Relatives and friends of Santiago Maldonado held an act on Monday in Plaza de Mayo to reiterate the request for “justice and truth”, on the fifth anniversary of the disappearance and death of the young artisan.
The concentration began at 5:00 p.m. with musical presentations by bands such as Las Manos de Filippi, La Delio Valdez and La Chilinga.
Sergio Maldonado, Santiago’s brother, assured that the case investigating the death of the missing young man after a repression carried out in August 2017 in Chubut by Gendarmerie agents, during the government of Mauricio Macri, “has been paralyzed in the Supreme Court since March of 2020”.
In addition, before the press, he said that President Alberto Fernández must have “political will” to change justice. “The claim is due to the lack of political will,” Sergio Maldonado declared.
Santiago Maldonado had participated on August 1, 2017, in a blockade of Route 40 together with members of a Mapuche community and, after the eviction carried out by members of the Gendarmerie, nothing more was heard of him: his disappearance shocked the country and was one of the main topics of public debate.
After several searches in the area, on October 17 of that year his body was found in the cold waters of the Chubut River.
