Algerian fencers distinguish themselves in the senior African championships which take place in the Moroccan city of Casablanca. They offered themselves three new medals, 1 gold, 1 silver and finally 1 bronze, during the 4th day of the discipline, devoted to team events, disputed yesterday.
The gold medal was won by the women’s saber team. Composed of Saoussen Boudiaf, Zahra Kahli, Abik Bounekab and Kaouter Mohamed-Belkbir, they took over Tunisia (45-27).
The men’s foil team, made up of Salim Heroui, Youcef Madi, Dani Adem Felah, won the silver. She lost in the final against Egypt (20-45).
As for the women’s epee team, made up of Meroua Gueham, Yousra Zeboudj, Racha Malek, they are content with money. Winner of the final for 3rd place ahead of Senegal (45-43).
At the end of this fourth day of competition, Algeria has a total of six medals. The Algerian fencers offer themselves 2 golds, 1 silver and 3 bronzes. Indeed, the first three Algerian medals were won by Zahra Kahli who beat in the women’s saber final the Egyptian Nada Hafez (15-10). The two bronze medals are the work of Saoussen Boudiaf (women’s saber) and Youcef Madi (men’s foil).
A very honorable participation from our fencers. We hope they can win medals on the international level.
Mebarki and Berkani content themselves with places of honor
The other Algerian fencers involved in the African Championships contented themselves with places of honour. We cite, among others, Meriem Mebarki (5th in women’s foil) and Raphaël Berkani (8th in men’s epee).
It should be noted that the national fencing team takes part in the competition in question with 21 athletes, ie 11 ladies and 10 gentlemen. Athletes engaged in the three weapons: saber, epee and foil.
The 5th and last day of competition will take place today. It will be devoted to the team events of women’s foil, men’s saber and men’s epee.
