After his last Formula 1 race for the time being at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Mick Schumacher wanted to at least let the tires smoke again and spin a few donuts.

However, he was promptly whistled back by the team: “Can you please stop making donuts, I’m sorry, Mick, but you just can’t do that,” was the exasperated radio message from the box. “It’s ok, I love you too,” Schumacher radioed back.

Apparently, Haas – where Schumacher had attracted negative attention, among other things because of the frequent accidental damage to the car – did not want to risk any further repair costs. Also in the race on Sunday, the 23-year-old caused a collision with Williams driver Nicholas Latifi and received a time penalty. At least he didn’t have to stop the race, but in the end he only finished 13th.

Logan Sargeant secures super license, Mick Schumacher is out

To make matters worse, the last back door through which Schumacher could have got hold of a regular cockpit was also closed in Abu Dhabi: Logan Sargeant finished the final FIA Formula 2 race of the season in fifth place, securing his super license. As a result, the 21-year-old can occupy the second Williams cockpit next year as planned, and Schumacher is out.

“I’m taking a lot with me, both positive and negative. That makes me a stronger driver,” says Schumacher, summing up his first two years in Formula 1. But quitting is not an option for him. “I have time now so I’ll look at all the options I have” he announces.

Schumacher as a test driver for Mercedes? Toto Wolff is keeping a low profile

However, his options in Formula 1 are limited: Since all cockpits for 2023 have already been taken, he must hope to be used as a starter again the following year. In the meantime, he could keep warm as a test driver.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, who sees himself as a companion of the Schumachers, had already expressed interest in the last few weeks: “If the opportunity arises [Schumacher als Ersatzpilot zu verpflichten]Mercedes would be open.”

Now that Schumacher’s end at Haas is certain, Wolff rows in an interview with “sky” However, back: “It was just very important to me – at the time when it was difficult for Mick – to say that we appreciate him, [und zu sagen]: ‘He deserves a place on the grid and not as a test driver’.”

But since Schumacher is actually looking for a job as a test driver, Wolff is keeping a low profile: “Perhaps there is an intermediate step where we can play a role”, he remains vague. Nevertheless, he emphasizes that Mick would fit “incredibly well with the star”. Discussions about a potential cooperation should probably still exist.
