The President leaves this afternoon for Spain/archive

Amid the backlash in the ruling party, the president, Alberto Fernández, leaves this afternoon for Spain and Germany, where he will hold meetings with the respective heads of government and with businessmen, official sources reported.

The President will depart at 5:00 pm from the Ezeiza airport on an Aerolineas Argentinas charter flight, accompanied by Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero; the Secretary for International Economic Relations of the Foreign Ministry, Cecilia Todesca; and the spokeswoman Gabriela Cerruti, as part of the entourage confirmed until last night. She would not be integrated by the Minister of Economy, Martín Guzmán, the target of criticism from Kirchnerism.

The Argentine president has confirmed audiences tomorrow, Tuesday, with the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, and on Wednesday with the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, as reported. Vice President Cristina Kirchner will be in charge of the Executive Power during these days (until next Thursday or Friday).

The purpose of the trip is “to continue with the insertion of Argentina in the world, to carry out conversations regarding the international situation, the one that Europe is going through in particular” and “to obtain investments for Argentina,” explained the spokesperson for the presidency.

President Fernández is expected to hold meetings with businessmen to address investment and export issues.

The Argentine president had traveled to Spain in May 2021, when he toured four European countries, and Sánchez visited Argentina in June last year, as it is the first time he will meet with Scholz.

Spain is the fourth European trading partner for Argentina, which in 2021 registered a trade surplus of 765 million dollars, and the second foreign investor, while the South American country is the sixth destination of Spanish foreign investment in the world, according to official data.

In turn, Germany is one of the main countries of origin of Argentine imports, with which our country registered a trade deficit of 1,719 million dollars in 2021.

Do they add France?

According to sources from the Presidency, in addition to the visits to Spain and Germany, the tour could include France to hold a bilateral meeting with the recently re-elected President Emmanuel Macron, before Fernández returns to Buenos Aires, scheduled for next Friday, although that scale was not officially confirmed.

In this sense, the Argentine President had agreed with his French counterpart to a visit that would take place after the elections that took place in April in the European country, and that is why there is speculation about a possible stopover of the trip in Paris.

The Secretary of Communication pointed out that it is a “trip that was scheduled” and on which the Foreign Ministry headed by Cafiero was finalizing the details of the official agenda.

In Europe, the President will hold meetings “with heads of state to, like all trips of this nature, continue with the insertion of Argentina in the world, to carry out conversations on the international situation – the one that Europe is going through in particular -, to obtain investments for Argentina and continue on this path of growth”, said Cerruti on that occasion.
