Vaccines are the best protection against severe Covid-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths. Still, vaccinated people can become infected with the coronavirus and develop symptoms of the disease.
After analyzing data from 4.7 million users of the Zoe Covid app, researchers from King’s College London, pointed out the five most common symptoms among those who took at least two doses of immunizations.
They appear in the following order of frequency:
- Coryza;
- Headache;
- sneezing;
- sore throat and
- Persistent cough.
According to the researchers, the symptoms differ slightly from those reported in the first waves of Covid, when people were not yet immunized.
Symptoms from the beginning of the pandemic, such as loss of smell (anosmia), fever and shortness of breath, became less frequent, occupying 6th, 8th and 29th positions, respectively.
Faced with the pandemic scenario and the expansion of the booster dose, some people still wonder what is the importance of the third dose of the vaccine against Covid-19stock
The booster dose should be administered at least four months after the individual completes the initial vaccination schedule. The extra application serves to increase the number of memory cells and further strengthen the antibodies they produce.Rafaela Felicciano / Metropolis
Specialists point out that one of the main measures provided by the booster dose is the expansion of the immune response. The third dose causes an increase in the amount of antibodies circulating in the body, which reduces the chance of the immunized person getting sick.Tomaz Silva/Agência Brasil

Another important measure is to reduce the chance of infection in case of new variants. The antibody promoted by the vaccine is directed to the strain that gave rise to the formula and, in this process, people also produce antibodies that have diversity. Reactions to the booster dose are similar to the two previous doses. Mild to moderate symptoms such as excessive tiredness and pain at the injection site are expected to occur. Those who took only one dose of immunizations reported headache, runny nose, sore throat, sneezing and persistent cough as the most frequent symptoms.
The unvaccinated who get sick complain of headache, sore throat, runny nose, fever and persistent cough, in that order.
“Loss of smell comes at number 9 and shortness of breath comes well down the list, indicating that previously recorded symptoms are changing with evolving variants of the virus,” the researchers wrote in content posted on the app’s official website.
The analysis did not take into account the variant that caused the infection, only the symptoms recorded by users. “There are a few reasons why symptoms may be changing, including the fact that those who were vaccinated had less severe symptoms, as well as more cases reported by younger people, we also found different and less severe symptoms,” the scientists say.
