If the 5G connection speed is an important criterion for choosing your smartphone, the new study conducted by Ookla should interest you. We discover the fastest phones on the fifth generation mobile network, in 10 different countries.
At a time when 5G is becoming more popular around the world, a new study highlights the five smartphones with the best 5G speeds in each country. Results that often give pride of place to high-end phones, but not only.
The fastest 5G smartphones by country
Ookla is the publisher of the famous web service Speedtest.net which allows us to analyze the connection speed of our devices. To carry out the study that interests us today, the company collected data in the 10 countries with the highest number of mobile devices connected to 5G in the third quarter of 2022 (according to GSMA). The selected countries are: Brazil, China, Germany, Japan, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam. Unfortunately, France is not on the list.
For each country, the results present the five fastest smartphones in 5G, among a selection of popular products in each country. To be part of this “short list”, phones must have a market share greater than 0.5% of all devices, with a minimum sample of 100 devices in each market. This gives a good overview of the fastest mobiles on the 5G network.
If the list of smartphones represented in each ranking is quite eclectic, we see a fairly blatant domination of the iPhone 13 (cited 14 times out of 50) and iPhone 14 (9 times), as well as the Samsung Galaxy (11 times). The breakdown by country is also far from balanced. We can cite for example the United Kingdom whose list is made up only of iPhones, with a median download speed measured at 171.24 Mb / s for the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The finding is similar in the United States with the two iPhone 14 Pro at the top of the ranking, followed by three Samsung smartphones, including the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The median speeds measured are very close to those of the United Kingdom. In Japan, we unsurprisingly find the Sony Xperia among the most popular smartphones. Thus, the Xperia 1 II 5G occupies first place in the ranking, far ahead of the competition thanks to a median download speed of 224.68 Mb / s.
The Chinese exception
Of the 10 countries presented in this study, 9 of them have at least one Apple or Samsung smartphone in the top 5. Only one country is an exception: China. In the Middle Kingdom, the OnePlus 9 5G leads the way with a median download speed of 349.15 Mb/s. The other four products in the ranking are all Huawei smartphones.
Regarding the median 5G speeds measured, China is one of the two countries exceeding 300 Mb/s. The country (present in this study) with the best scores in 5G being Brazil with median download speeds of 358.39 Mb/s. s with the Motorola G 5G Plus. A mid-range phone sold for less than 400 euros with us, such as the Xiaomi Poco X4 Pro 5G, second in the ranking.
Several conclusions can be drawn from this study. The first concerns Apple and Samsung, which remain the most popular 5G smartphone brands in many countries. The second is that you don’t need to have a high-end smartphone to enjoy excellent 5G speeds. Finally, the last concerns the speed of the 5G speeds offered in the world, with a country in Asia and a country in South America at the top of the ranking.
