After the movie Aquaman (which you can recover on Amazon) he passed it 1 billion dollars at the box office, there was no doubt that there would be a sequel. However, what is perhaps surprising is that the sequel, the full title of which is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, seems to be taking a strong inspiration from an influential Italian horror of the 60s.
Aquaman 2: the horror twists according to James Wan
Director James Wan, during an interview for the new issue of the magazine Total Film, he has declared:
“Aquaman 2 is heavily inspired by Terror in Space. So you can take the protagonist out of the horror, but you can never take the horror out of the protagonist ”.
For those who don’t know, Terror in space (Also known as Planet of the Vampires) is a 1965 space horror adventure that tells the story of two ships landing on a mysterious planet, but the two crews are possessed by an unknown evil. Directed by the Italian master Mario Bava, the film was greeted with positive reviews right away and many speculated that it had a major influence on Alien by Ridley Scott and its prequel, Prometheus.
This suggests that Wan, who has long been a horror masterpiece director thanks to his films Saw, Insidious e The Conjuring, is ready to delve even further into the horror landscape than the first Aquaman we all remember the masterful sequence set in the Trench region.
James Wan then added:
“Well, the first movie took a lot of people by surprise, right? And this is partly due to the fact that they were not familiar with the comic, which deals with this very eerie and strange world. People were amazed that I didn’t make a dark and heavy film. But I didn’t think it would be right. So, with the second film, I feel it will be easier for people to accept the new path as I have already laid the foundations ”.
Speaking with Total Film to promote his next horror Malignant (out September 10), Wan also confirmed that he is engaged in the main photography management from Aquaman 2. The latter should come out on December 16, 2022.
