Toni Kroos and sports reporters: that has been an explosive combination lately. It was only in May that the midfielder clashed with ZDF reporter Nils Kaben after his Real Madrid team won the Champions League. Videos of his freak out went viral afterwards.

The main point was that Kroos considered the reporter’s critical questions about the Real game so immediately after his team’s great triumph inappropriate. “You had 90 minutes to think about sensible questions, honestly. And then you ask me two shitty questions,” Kroos rumbled at the time. “It’s really bad. You first ask three negative questions. Then you already know that you’re from Germany.”

The 32-year-old does not appear to have given up his critical attitude towards sports reporting in this country. Because on Monday he hit the same notch on Twitter as after the CL final. This time, the performance of the German basketball players, who won bronze at the European Championships on Sunday evening, was not sufficiently appreciated.

Kroos’ criticism was sparked by an article by “Picture”. “The article is cheeky… the author can never have done any sport,” tweeted the 106-time German international on Monday. The “Bild” reporter wrote that the game was difficult to watch. Germany “choked” to bronze and both teams “tormented” the spectators with hair-raising mistakes for a long time.

Germany wins first medal in 17 years

Kroos, however, thought it was sensational how Germany bounced back two days after a disappointing semi-final defeat by eventual European champions Spain. “Be proud, almost all of Germany is too,” he wrote in the direction of the DBB team.

Germany beat Poland in the game for third place on Sunday evening and thus won the first German medal in 17 years. Basketball legend Dirk Nowitzki sees the German team in front of a successful future. “The top performers are all still young. There’s a lot in it. Some weren’t there because of injuries. Basketball Germany could be in for rosy times,” said Nowitzki in his analysis of the European Championship at MagentaSport.
