BBC is giving Gladiators a major overhaul ahead of new series – it should make the show even better

THE search for new Gladiators to include in the BBC reboot is ongoing – and the show’s bosses are looking to clear up all the trouble.

They want to make sure the latest generation has as much personality as muscle after fans accused the stars of 2008’s Sky version of being too bland.

Contestants are asked to name their “super power” and reveal who would play them in a Hollywood movie.

It’s an attempt to find larger than life characters that will be a big hit with viewers, much like the ITV series Nineties.

A show insider said: “Bosses want the new Gladiators to have personality packs, just like the original.

“It’s hard to remember any of the Gladiators from the Sky version as they were deemed too robotic.

“The reboot will be more of a nod to the original, where the cast became huge stars.”

The BBC announced in August that the popular show would return in 2023 after a 14-year hiatus.

The remake has been inundated with contestants hoping to be either gladiators or competitors, and the producers expect some household names from the sports world to be among them.

The questionnaire accompanying the nominations also asks people to name any professional-level sporting events they have participated in, as well as to share any “notable sporting awards or accolades”.

The original series was a massive hit on Saturday nights when it ran from 1992 to 2000, with John Fashanu and Ulrika Jonsson on hosting duties.

Gladiators such as Jet, Panther, Hunter, Saracen and Wolf became household names and are still fondly remembered by fans.

The BBC reboot could potentially have a new villain Wolf, after it was revealed the son of former series villain Michael Van Wijk has applied to be one of the new Gladiators for the series. 11 episodes filmed in Sheffield next year.

It’s a scary thought.
