Börje Salming has passed away aged 71. The hockey legend fought the disease until the end.
In August, Börje Salming told us that he had suffered from the incurable nerve disease ALS:
– I have received a message that has shaken the life of me and my family, he said then in a statement to TT.
In October, Börje and his wife Pia appeared in a larger interview with The Express. Then the hockey legend could no longer speak.
“I’m thinking of you”, Börje keyed in a greeting to his fans on an Ipad.
In the last period of the hockey legend’s life, he fell deeper and deeper into the grip of the disease, but he fought back.
The disease took an increasingly hard hold on Börje Salming
In the interview with Expressen last autumn, Pia said that Börje got worse with each passing week.
Then he could still make the bed, water the flowers and, if he sat down, put on clothes.
But he couldn’t talk, and he couldn’t eat. Instead, he had to be tube-fed.
– It cannot be described. Seeing the person you love feel this bad… and you can’t do anything. It’s a pain every day to see how bad Börje is, Pia said then.
Despite the disease’s grip on the hockey legend tightening, Börje made it to Toronto the week before last.
There he was feted by his former hockey team the Toronto Maple Leaf in front of a packed Scotiabank Arena.
Börje was led out onto the ice and stood leaning against his friend and former hockey player Mats Sundin.
When Börje received a standing ovation, he burst into tears:
Börje Salming at the gala – a week ago
A week later, last Thursday, Börje was celebrated again during the “Hockey Gala of the Ages” in the Avicii Arena.
The 71-year-old was led in by his family to receive the NHL’s honorary award, where wife Pia gave a speech of thanks in Börje’s honor.
When Pia visited the SVT studio after the gala, she said that Börje would focus on the family:
– We will close the door to the outside world from today. We are happy and grateful. We are warmed by the love we get from Sweden.
– We get letters sent to us, people are fantastic. We take one day at a time, Börje decides. He has the baton, she says in SVT.
Today, November 24, Börje passed away aged 71.
