Brad Pitt defends Ana de Armas in the role of Marilyn Monroe

Recently released the trailer for Blonde, a biopic about Marilyn Monroe and although the main actress Ana de Armas has mostly received the people’s cheers, people on the internet have once again shown their ugliest side. It’s about the fact that Ana is of Cuban birth and has an accent and it is absolutely not possible, some thought and showed their displeasure on various social media platforms. Some more constructively than others, in true Twitter style. However, Brad Pitt, who produces the film via his production company Plan B Entertainment, stands behind the film’s star one hundred percent. He has nothing but praise to give. In fact, Ana de Armas is the reason the film was able to be completed at all. This is what he tells Entertainment Tonight:

“She is phenomenal in it. That’s a tough dress to fill. It was 10 years in the making and it wasn’t until we found Ana that we could get it across the finish line.”

But he is not alone in supporting the choice of actress. Marc Rosen, CEO of Authentic Brands Group, which in turn owns the Marilyn Monroe Estate itself, made the following statement after watching the trailer:

“Marilyn Monroe is a singular Hollywood and pop culture icon that transcends generations and history. Any actor that steps into that role knows they have big shoes to fill. Based on the trailer alone, it looks like Ana was a great casting choice as she captures Marilyn’s glamour, humanity and vulnerability. We can’t wait to see the film in its entirety!”

Ana de Armas has previously also shared how much time and work she has invested in preparing for the role. How the team worked countless hours, every day for almost a whole year to do the icon justice. She read the book on which the film is based, studied hundreds of photographs, watched film clips, listened to audio recordings – basically everything she could get her hands on. As for the voice itself, she spent nine months with a “dialect coach” to be able to dot the pronunciation as close to the original as possible.

Director Andrew Dominik never hesitated. In fact, it only took one audition. In an interview with Vanity Fair told de Armas about how it happened when the dream came true, when it became clear that she would have the honor of portraying one of Hollywood’s biggest names:

“I only had to audition for Marilyn once and Andrew said ‘It’s you,’ but I had to audition for everyone else. The producers. The money people. I always have people I needed to convince. But I knew I could do it. Playing Marilyn was groundbreaking. A Cuban playing Marilyn Monroe. I wanted it so badly. You see that famous photo of her and she is smiling in the moment, but that’s just a slice of what she was really going through at the time.”

Blonde premieres on Netflix September 28th
