Brandenburg Gate shines in Ukrainian colors on Monday evening

On the occasion of Europe Day, the Brandenburg Gate was illuminated in the Ukrainian national colors on Monday evening. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and France’s re-elected President Emmanuel Macron visited the landmark together after a meeting in Berlin.

The federal government and the city of Berlin had previously jointly decided to illuminate the Brandenburg Gate in the Ukrainian colors of blue and yellow in the evening hours of May 9th.

“This sign of solidarity goes back to an initiative of the French Council Presidency,” said deputy government spokesman Wolfgang Büchner.

In the individual EU countries, individual buildings would each shine in the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Büchner said: “Our signal is very clear, the European Union is on the side of Ukraine and its people”.

The Europe Day goes back to the so-called Schuman Declaration. On May 9, 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed in a speech the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community. (dpa)
