After 17 years as sports director at BVB, Michael Zorc’s contract expired and his time in Dortmund was over. At the end of the 2021/22 season, the fans gave the BVB record player an emotional farewell, even with great choreography.

Zorc now enjoys his private life away from football. According to “Sport Bild” he spends a lot of time in Mallorca and devotes himself to golf. However, that could change soon: According to the report, managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke plans to bring back the fan favorite.

Dortmund needs reinforcements for squad planning

A week ago the “West German General Newspaper” reports that the BVB bosses would welcome an additional sportingly competent person in the club management. Since Zorc’s resignation and Watzke’s side commitment on the DFL supervisory board, squad planning has rested solely on the shoulders of Zorc’s successor Sebastian Kehl.

Kehl has been gaining experience as head of the licensed player department since 2018 and proved in the summer that he can attract professionals to BVB. After a disappointing first half of the season (6th place during the winter break), his transfer policy is apparently being critically questioned internally.

However, Zorc is not expected to return to the Borussia Dortmund executive. Instead, according to “Sport Bild”, Watzke plans to offer the former employee a supervisory board position in the summer.

Zorc’s expertise continues to be in demand

As a result, Zorc would not be involved in the current day-to-day business, but would also act in an advisory capacity. The 60-year-old probably still has time for his love of golf.

Zorc has an excellent reputation in Dortmund, built up Borussia Dortmund in his 17 years as sports director together with managing director Watzke and developed BVB into a top club. Together with his scouting team, Zorc brought top players like Robert Lewandowski and Shinji Kagawa to Dortmund. No wonder Watzke would like to have this expertise back at the club.

Before he left BVB, Zorc had said: “My work here has always filled me completely. And now I feel like it’s going to be good.” The coming weeks will probably show whether Zorc’s opinion has changed.
