Call of Duty: Vanguard vs Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Campaign-wise, Call of Duty has tested most things at this point. What started with primarily World War II has since jumped between present, past, future and then with last year’s Vanguard we were once again back on the tough, merciless battlefields of World War II. Vanguard’s campaign is very cinematic and somewhere it still touches on the Second World War, but somewhere Vanguard fails. We all know a lot of what happened during the Second World War, and it’s really open-ended in terms of storytelling, but it usually feels too messy and in the end it’s hard to be touched or even care about how it ends.

Modern Warfare 2, on the other hand, doesn’t have a particularly deep or original campaign either, it takes place in modern times and this time, it’s once again primarily terrorists who threaten world peace and a cartel that has broadened its repertoire a bit. It’s a fast-paced campaign as it usually is without really adding anything new to the genre, but it’s still a couple of issues bigger than Vanguard and viewed with nostalgic eyes, it’s always nice to see Soap and Captain Price again. Winner: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty: Vanguard vs Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Captain Price, Soap McTavish and Ghost. There we have three really solid characters who have been in a total of five games now. Ghost also got his own game but it was as we all remember nothing memorable at all. All of them already returned in Modern Warfare, which was rebooted in 2019, and it was certainly not a high-oddsman right away that the gang would continue to be trusted even in the second. All of them are quite lovable and especially the tough Scot Captain Price who is probably the best character ever in Call of Duty. One of the best missions of all time is without a doubt All Ghillied Up and no one who has played it forgets that crawling around in camouflage with the Captain and sniping enemies is lovely. In Modern Warfare 2, Soap and Price are reunited with their snipers and ghillie suit and it’s a lovely nostalgia trip. However, the game’s other characters aren’t particularly memorable, and neither Hassan Ziyani nor El Sin Nombre are particularly colorful villains in the end.

In Vanguard we again follow a group of heroes from the Second World War, there are a total of 12 playable characters which is considerably more than Modern Warfare 2 where you usually play as either Soap or Gaz primarily. However, more playable characters does not necessarily mean better and despite a strong ensemble that includes Laura Bailey and Dominic Monaghan, among others, no one really stands out. The dialogue is not very well written, just like the game in general, and even though all the horrors of the Second World War are normally touching, it is very difficult to be touched in any way by the Vanguard and the characters. It would most likely have been better to focus more on two or three pieces and give them more space and depth, now instead it becomes mostly messy and disengaged. Which is a shame as there was undeniably potential to make something really good out of WWII for the first time since Call of Duty 2. Winner: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

I probably wouldn’t go so far as to call guns charming to any extent, but there is still a bit of a special feeling with an old honorable MP-40 or why not an M1 Garand? At the same time, many of us have probably been kicking around with the slightly more modern M16 and MP5 in high gear many times over the years. From a purely objective point of view, of course the weapons are clearly better, more powerful and more effective in Modern Warfare 2, but there is something about the feel of the old classics that ultimately weighs in Vanguard’s favor. Winner: Call of Duty Vanguard

Which of these two games do you think is the best?

On paper, it looks quite the same, all the classic multiplayer modes are there, such as Team Deathmatch, Free for all, dominance, kill confirmed and more are there. However, Modern Warfare 2 has a few more modes to boast of, but Vanguard, on the other hand, has the ever-popular Zombie mode on its side, something that Modern Warfare 2 doesn’t have at the moment at least. Are the zombies enough to clinch victory in the category? No, that alone isn’t enough to tip the scales in Vanguard’s favor, the maps and offerings in Modern Warfare ultimately weigh more heavily when it comes down to it. It flows a bit better overall and it’s not least a more fun online game than Vanguard is. On Xbox, Modern Warfare 2 gets a minus, however, as it is not possible to turn off cross-play, which will certainly scare away players.Winner: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
