The labor shortage in the health sector is one of the challenges facing Canada. Indeed, to frame this crisis, the Canadian government has chosen to appeal to immigration and the recognition of the skills of immigrants.

In this wake, Quebec launched, in 2021, an international recruitment company, of 1000 nurses, able to work, to settle in Canada. The first 200 candidates came from Tunisia, Morocco, Cameroon, Mauritius and Algeria and have already started their training prescribed by the Order of Nurses of Quebec. At the end of this training, these nurses will obtain the right to practice in Quebec, then the possibility of bringing their families to Canada, who will in turn receive an open work permit, according to the announcement made in February 2022.

This is also the case of Hayat T who chose to leave Algeria to pursue her career as a nurse in Gaspésie.

An Algerian nurse goes to the rescue of the health system in Quebec

Hayat began to think about immigration following the Delta crisis of covid-19, in a testimony to the Journal du Québec, she says that for lack of means, she had never thought of immigration before. Bachelor, in Algeria, Hayat worked for six years as a nurse in oncology, in private, and in cardiology in the public.

Hayat, single and only child, says that she had not informed her parents of her steps until she obtained her position in Gaspésie. While she expected a refusal, the request and the interviews were made quickly by the CISSS de la Gaspésie. Everything is settled in nine months.

Despite the many obstacles encountered during her efforts, the 29-year-old young woman has not given up on her dream. She says the language factor helped her a lot in making her decision. Hayat also recalls that a friend of hers had put him in touch with a person established in this region to be able to find a roof to live in. And escape the crisis that also affects Gaspésie.

In addition to the lack of housing in this region, the different climatic conditions, Hayat found that what also differs is the code of ethics and the values of practice of this profession. Today, this Algerian must follow a 915-hour training course, granted by the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Iles. And this, before being able to resume his practice at the Gaspé hospital. Hayat also works, part-time, as a beneficiary attendant during this training.
