Cellular: All network providers fail at eliminating white spots

The mobile network operators often and gladly report on their progress in network expansion. However, that does not mean that they would actually achieve the targets. Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefonica are all said to lag behind here.

In a report to its advisory board, the Federal Network Agency announced that the network operators are making too slow progress, especially when it comes to closing the dead spots in the 4G infrastructure. The news agency did DPA Experienced. All three will probably not meet the official requirements for network expansion, to which the allocation of radio frequencies is linked, among other things.

When the Federal Network Agency licensed new radio spectra to mobile operators in 2019, they were obliged to eliminate around 500 white spots by the end of this year. So that this can be done quickly, each network operator should take care of a third of the gaps, set up a radio mast there and ensure that it can be used by the other two.

guilt is unclear

In purely mathematical terms, each of the network operators would have to have opened up more than 160 new locations and equipped them with the necessary technology by New Year’s Eve. According to the report, only a fraction has been reported to the Federal Network Agency so far: by Telefonica 45, by Telekom 28 and by Vodafone 12.

The network operators emphasize that they are working flat out to expand the network. In general, it’s not entirely possible to blame them for all issues, so there probably won’t be any significant penalties for the delays. The reason why there is still no system in a dead zone must be checked on a case-by-case basis. There are also cases in which the network operators want to do something, but authorities or municipalities put obstacles in their way.

In most cases, it is not a question of complete dead spots. 2G reception for telephoning is definitely available here, but there is a lack of broadband data connections, which most users attach much more importance to today.
