Cinema quake in Hollywood |
The “Joker” is coming back – but “Batgirl” can’t
For HER it would have been the first full-length feature film – HE is allowed to watch it for the second time.
The “Joker” took Hollywood by storm in 2019, picking up two Oscars and eleven nominations. “Batgirl” should finally jump on the successful train of superhero films.
But while a sequel has now been announced for the “Joker”, the “Batgirl” film version disappears in the poison cupboard.
As in the first part, Todd Philips (51) will direct the continuation of the “Joker” hit. Joker: Folie à Deux is slated for release in October 2024. According to the industry portal “Deadline”, the start of shooting is planned for December.
on Instagram the director posted a photo of the script – and of actor Joaquin Phoenix (47) reading it. So it seems like he’s also on board as the main actor in the second part. As Batman’s mentally ill adversary, he won an Oscar in 2020.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, singer Lady Gaga (36) is also in talks for a role.
The film title “Folie à Deux” means something like “mental disorder for two”. The term describes the assumption of delusions of another person suffering from a psychosis.
“Batgirl” was filmed – and sawed off
Unfortunately, the train has left for “Batgirl” with actress Leslie Grace (27, “In the Heights”) in the title role: Although the film has already been shot, the Warner Bros. Discovery film studio is removing it from its program!
It would have been the first solo film for the superheroine.
The “Batgirl” directors are appalled: “We are sad and shocked by the news,” wrote Adil El Arbi (34) and Bilall Fallah (36) on Wednesday Instagram. “We still can’t believe it.”
They wished that fans around the world would have had the opportunity to see the film.
Lead actress Grace wrote down InstagramDespite the bad news, she said she was “proud of the love, hard work and determination that all our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film, which took seven months to shoot in Scotland.”
She feels “blessed to have worked under absolute greats and in the process to have formed relationships of a lifetime!”
Despite the star cast – including Michael Keaton (70), who slipped back into the role of “Batman”, Oscar winner JK Simmons (67) and Brendan Fraser (53) as the villain – the film was simply sawed off. It shouldn’t even be available on the HBO Max streaming platform.
The reason is unclear – Warner Bros. Discovery has not yet officially commented on the decision. However, a spokesman emphasized that it was not due to the performance of leading actress Grace.
The New York Post, citing Hollywood insiders, reported that audience test screenings had been poor. Noisy “ The Wrap‘ the film ‘simply didn’t work’. According to other reports, “Batgirl” has become a victim of strategic choices.
This year, media giant WarnerMedia — which owns Hollywood studio Warner Bros. and HBO Max — and Discovery merged to form Warner Bros. Discovery. It is possible that the company now wants to primarily produce cinema films instead of films for the streaming platform. However, Batgirl was originally scheduled to air on HBO Max.
Instead, people continue to bet on the success of sequels – as has been the case with superhero films for years.
