The Federation of German Consumer Organizations (vzbv) asked forsa to question 1500 people from the age of 14 on consumer protection in Germany. Of the Consumer report 2021 show: protection in the digital world remains a permanent construction site. Consumers, however, benefit from higher prices for more climate protection or more state controls for more product safety.
According to the report, 56 percent of consumers do not feel properly protected in the digital sector. A third of all consumer complaints relate to digital services. The consumer advice centers received more than 100,000 complaints in the first half of 2021. The main complaints? Revocations for online shopping, returns or deferred contracts.
Only 24 percent of those questioned said that they trusted politics when it came to consumer protection. At the same time, however, 86 percent of consumers believe that politicians are responsible for protecting consumer interests. According to the survey, the federal government should also promote climate protection and sustainable developments in all consumer areas through rules and standards. This includes better information on products and services, stricter requirements for the economy, but also more product safety.
Climate protection? You would even pay for it – if higher prices were necessary, most of the respondents would accept them. A good seven out of ten respondents think, however, that low-income consumers should receive support with these price increases.
