Converse and Pokémon have just unveiled an unprecedented collection with four new retro models inspired by pocket monsters.
After a collaboration presented a few months ago around the Pokémon franchise, Converse returns to the charge, this time paying homage to the roots of the saga. This week, The Pokémon Company and the Japanese subsidiary of the sneaker manufacturer formalized four new models inspired by the first pocket monsters.
Pikachu, Eevee, Charizard and Mewtwo
Among the adult models, we find four emblematic figures of the series. Each pair of sneakers comes in a brand new colourway, a label with the original pixel art sprite on the tongue, and a vinyl print near the heel showing the Pokémon’s name, Pokédex number, weight and height . Each model also comes with a personalized label with a Pokéball, a Super Ball, a Hyper Ball, or a Master Ball depending on the creature to be captured.
Compared to previous models, this collection undoubtedly stands out for its less garish style. With its neutral colors and its reference to the original generation, the new Converse x Pokémon collaboration is aimed at thirtysomethings nostalgic for the retro gaming era rather than newcomers.
The children too
If Converse has obviously taken care to seduce the oldest with its new retro collection, the brand also focuses on the youngest, who constitute the core of its new audience. 25 years after the creation of the license, the pocket monsters are thus entitled to a new capsule collection, which sports brighter colors, and undoubtedly less subtle details. We find Pikachu and Eevee, but also Mew and Piplup, the adorable Water starter of the Diamond, Pearl and Platinum generations.
Marketing should begin within a few weeks in Japan, with prices estimated at around $75 per model. For the moment, the collection seems to be reserved solely for Japanese territory. You will therefore have to go through specialized sites if you absolutely want to get your hands on these new products.
