NRW will care for Covid sufferers from other federal states. Local clinics then have to postpone operations. That is what the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia decided.
he NRW state government and the opposition have agreed in an urgent procedure to change the Infection Protection Act. This gives the NRW Ministry of Health more powers vis-à-vis the hospitals in order to be able to control the admission of corona patients from other federal states faster and better. In the state parliament, all parliamentary groups voted for it on Friday.
NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) praised this as a sign of “responsibility, solidarity and cohesion”. Today the first patients would be flown to NRW with Bundeswehr machines from other parts of Germany. The country can help and will do so. In NRW, too, it could become necessary that planned operations would have to be postponed again. The situation in Germany is serious.
NRW Prime Minister Wüst: “This is also affecting many people who have been vaccinated”
“This now also affects many people who have had themselves vaccinated, who have been careful, but who have to undergo an operation for other reasons,” said Wüst. A “gigantic solidarity effort” is required of these people. According to Wüst, there are difficult weeks ahead of NRW. With solidarity you can get through this difficult time together.
“We want to help,” said Henning Höne (FDP). The situation in North Rhine-Westphalia is serious, but manageable. Therefore one can help patients from other federal states. SPD parliamentary group leader Thomas Kutschaty said: “The fourth wave is rolling through Germany.” In an emergency one has to show solidarity. “When it comes to life and death, there is always only one way: that of help.”
According to information from the German Press Agency, a special Air Force aircraft is due to land at the Bavarian airport Memmingen this Friday and fly seriously ill people to Münster-Osnabrück. The arrival of the machine in NRW was planned for the early evening.
NRW government: Hospitals should postpone planned operations
The hospitals should, where it is medically justifiable, “postpone postponed treatments in whole or in part” in order to care for Covid-19 patients. This means that patients from hospitals in other “regions, federal states and states” should also be able to be cared for, according to the draft ordinance.

As part of the so-called cloverleaf system, Covid 19 patients should be able to be distributed nationwide if hospitals are threatened with collapse in individual regions. In NRW, according to state figures from Friday, 2595 corona patients are being treated in the hospital, 334 of them in intensive care units with ventilation. 362 intensive care beds with ventilation for very severe cases are currently still available in North Rhine-Westphalia.
