Coronavirus: BBC journalist arrested in Shanghai

UA BBC journalist was arrested while covering protests in the Chinese city of Shanghai, several British media reported on Sunday.


The images circulating show several police officers pinning the journalist to the ground, handcuffing him and taking him away. He allegedly shouted to his colleague: “Call the consulate now”. According to the BBC, he was held for several hours before being released.

This arrest took place during a demonstration in Shanghai against the Chinese government’s “zero Covid” policy. Thousands of people took to the streets of the megalopolis on Sunday, but also in Beijing, Wuhan and other cities in China to protest against the excessive confinements, a rare demonstration of hostility towards the regime of President Xi Jinping.
