Lhe Brussels council chamber decided on Thursday to extend the preventive detention of Nicolo Figa-Talamanca and Francesco Giorgi by one month, according to the federal prosecutor’s office. The two men are charged in the investigation for corruption in the European Parliament.
Francesco Giorgi is the companion of Eva Kaili, the former vice-president of the European Parliament, also charged. He is also the collaborator of the former Italian MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri. Panzeri is considered the key figure in the case. He obtained, a few days ago, the status of repentant in exchange for active collaboration in bringing to light the whole system of corruption.
A second penitent in Belgium: how is it going?
Nicolo Figa-Talamanca was arrested on the same day as Giorgi, Kaili and Panzeri, December 9, 2022. Eva Kaili’s father and trade unionist Luca Visentini were also arrested on that date, then released after questioning.
Last week, the provisional detention of MEP Eva Kaili was extended by Belgian justice. The Brussels Council Chamber then followed the position of the prosecution, which was opposed to the alternative measures to detention demanded by the lawyers of the elected socialist.
