  • How worried are people about being mugged or robbed (especially car theft)?
  • The risk of physical aggression by strangers;
  • The risk of enduring insults and harassment in the street;
  • The risk of being physically attacked because of their skin color, ethnic origin or religion;
  • The sale and consumption of drugs;
  • The economic cost of violent crime (against people and property).
Global Crime Index Map by Country 2022

The crime index is an estimate of the overall level of crime in a given city or country. A score below 20 means a level of criminality very low; between 20 and 40, it is weak; between 40 and 60, it is moderate; between 60 and 80, it becomes raised ; finally, a score above 80 reflects a level of criminality very high .

Is this data less accurate than government statistics? Some countries have detailed crime statistics. If these are useful for comparing the crime rate between two cities in the same country, they are much less so for a comparison between countries, because:

  • People’s propensity to report crimes varies from country to country;
  • Some government institutions are susceptible to falsifying data;
  • In most countries, there are no statistics available.
