Damage after Cyclone Batsirai in Madagascar

Cyclone Batsirai kills several in Madagascar

Cyclone Batsirai killed at least six people in Madagascar. Almost 48,000 people had to flee their homes when the tropical storm swept across the East African island nation overnight, according to the civil protection agency.

“Batsirai” had reached the east of the island yesterday evening with wind speeds of 165 km/h – later wind speeds of up to 235 km/h were measured. The storm had previously raged in Mauritius and the French island of Reunion. The French weather service Meteo-France warned of “a very serious threat” to Madagascar.

Tropical storm Ana caused severe damage in Madagascar at the end of January. At least 58 people were killed, most in the capital, Antananarivo.
