Washingtron.- Donald Trump was awarded on November 20 with an honorary black belt by the South Korean World Taekwondo Academy (Kukkiwon), due to his interest in this martial art. The belt awarded to the former president of the United States corresponds to a 9th dan, the highest that can be achieved, reports Word Taekwondo United News.
The much-respected belt and certificate were presented to Trump on Friday by Lee Dong-seop, the president of the Seoul-based Kukkiwon organization. The ceremony took place at Trump’s residence at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
“It is an honor for me to receive the honorary dan certificate and I believe that taekwondo is a magnificent martial art for self defense. I want to see the demonstration of the Kukkiwon Taekwondo Team,” said the former president.
The recognition means that Trump now shares the same rank as Russian President Vladimir Putin, who received an honorary black belt and was named a taekwondo grandmaster during an official visit to South Korea in 2013.
However, Putin is also a veteran practitioner of other martial arts, particularly judo, in which he holds the title of Leningrad lightweight champion.
