Earthquake kills 162 in Indonesia

Medan, Indonesia.- The earthquake that occurred in Indonesia on Monday left at least 162 dead, the Governor of the West Java province, the most affected by the quake, and a local official reported late at night.

“I am sorry to report that 162 have died,” West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil said in a video seen by AFP. Adam, a spokesman for the administration of the city of Cianjur, in West Java, and who, like many of his compatriots, does not have a last name, confirmed that balance.

Residents, some crying and carrying children, fled damaged houses after the 5.6-magnitude quake struck the region.

It also caused panic in the Jakarta metropolitan area, where skyscrapers wobbled and some people evacuated.

Officials collected information on the number of people injured and killed by the earthquake in the remote area.
