Motorized passenger ships have been sailing across Lake Constance for almost 200 years. Now the first e-ferry has started.
The first electric ferry on Lake Constance left the port of Uhldingen-Mühlhofen for its first scheduled trip. After welcome trips from Konstanz at the weekend, the battery-electric ship started scheduled services to the island of Mainau for the first time.
Since another port is approached on the connection in the morning and the electric ship is not designed for this, the ship “Mainau Island” will initially only be on the route in the afternoon, said a spokesman for Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe (BSB) in Constance.
The first welcome trips by this ferry were actually planned for mid-July. According to the BSB, the final work on the ship was delayed due to significant delivery problems as a result of the Ukraine war.
E-ferry traveling at 15 kilometers per hour
The ship, named after the island of Mainau, is intended to bring up to 300 people to the flower island and the northern shore of the lake on its trips. The ferry, which costs 3.6 million euros, has a 1,000-kilowatt-hour battery that is charged during the lunch break and at night. To save energy, the ship travels through the water at 15 kilometers per hour.
With the e-ferry, the BSB wants to pave the way to more environmentally friendly shipping on Lake Constance. If the “Mainau Island” proves itself in ferry service by the end of 2023, the BSB wants to commission another identical electric ship. The sister ferry could then go into operation in 2025. In the spring of 2023, test runs of another ferry are planned, which could be operated in a climate-neutral manner when using bio-liquefied gas.
