European Championships 2022: the French climbing selection for Munich

The French Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing (FFME) unveiled, Friday, July 29, the French selection who will leave for Munich on the occasion of the VSEuropean sports championships.

Alongside athletics, rowing, beach volleyball, canoeing, cycling, artistic gymnastics, table tennis and triathlon, climbing offers great hopes of medals.

The selection notably includes Oriane Bertone, 17, the youngest climber to have climbed a block rated “8B+/V14” at the age of 12. TodayShe is already the holder of three World Cup silver medals. This immense hope will be accompanied, among other things, by Mejdi Schalck, 18 years old and gold medalist on May 20 in the bouldering event at the 3rd stage of the World Cup in Salt Lake City (USA).

The French team also relies on more experienced climbers and climbers like the 2019 European champion Mickaël Mawem (32), who came 5th in the combined final at the Tokyo Olympics. Former world No. 3 Fanny Gibert (29) and Manuel Cornu (28), winner of a World Cup round in 2019, can also hope to leave with a charm. Savoyard Julia Chanourdie (26) will however be absent due to injury.

All also want to prepare ideally for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, while the combined, one of the events of the Olympic event in two years, which has the particularity of mixing the “boulder” and “difficulty” categories, will be the first round of these championships.
