MediaTek surprised by announcing the Dimensity 9000, “world’s first” in many ways. Its benchmark results surprised by running over the Apple A15 Bionic and getting closer to the Apple M1. This could be a headache for Qualcomm. However, the American company has a market factor playing in its favor.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is expected to be announced next week, and as soon as that happens, Xiaomi and Motorola are expected to announce top-of-the-line chips with the chip. They are brands with good shares of global marketshare, and these devices will be the first showcases for Qualcomm’s new processing platform.
The Dimensity 9000 is already confirmed to supply cell phones from Vivo Mobile, Realme, Xiaomi, Motorola, OnePlus and others — but it should not reach the market in 2021. In fact, insider TODOPlass, via Weibo, says that the first with this SoC will only be seen in February.

Advantage for Qualcomm
So, even if Qualcomm fails to announce a chip that surpasses the Dimensity 9000 in technical specifications, products equipped with the chip will hit the market three months before the MediaTek solution. Anyone who is eager to switch smartphones may not have the patience to wait for so long.
As you can imagine, those who buy a premium cell phone usually don’t have plans to change it in the short term. With this, devices with Qualcomm’s SoC can conquer more pockets before MediaTek, which even so should not be objectively harmed since its chip will be stocks and stocks purchased by manufacturers next year.
So, by all appearances, even though the Dimensity 9000 is the world’s first in many things, Qualcomm seems to have a better scenario to gain traction with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in this semiconductor “war”.
The chips are made up of far more than the CPU, but in this respect, Snapdragon and Dimensity come close: both should offer the Cortex-X2 at 3.0 GHz as their maximum performance core. The Dimensity 9000 also brings 3x Cortex -A710 to balance, and 4x Cortex-A510 for energy efficiency. Qualcomm can bet on the same path.
It is worth remembering that between January and February one more competitor should hit the market: we are talking about the Exynos 2200, which due to current leaks, should not hit the Dimensity 9000 in CPU. Its GPU, however, sounds promising, thanks to the alliance made with AMD.
