Foodtech startup challenge 2022: 12 startups stand out

The agronomy sector and that of startups, two fields of activity essential to the Algerian economic development which converge: the Foodtech startup challenge. This highlights innovation in the fields of agriculture, agri-food and aquaculture during a program rich in projects.

The fourth edition took place this Thursday, May 12, 2022 and was placed under the theme of “innovation at the service of food safety”. During this one, 12 projects were rewarded and on the podium the various companies are all distinguished by their concepts, their technologies and their innovative initiatives.

For example, with regard to the “Agrotech” category of agri-food innovations, “Pacicoffee”, which received the first prize, presented an edible and biodegradable packaging for the packaging of hot drinks, which therefore takes into account the economic but also the environmental aspect. .
The “Sawem” application, for its part, has bet on digital by offering a direct service to the consumer: the possibility of scanning the barcodes of products directly in supermarkets and thus allowing a simulation of the final basket by displaying the name and the price of each product.
Third place goes to “Repast”, a startup that offers connection between housewives and consumers through the distribution of meals. An alternative to the “Fast-food” delivery service quite advantageous for households and “non-professionals” in the catering industry.

Regarding the category of agricultural innovations, the three winners are: “Sodea Hasnaoui”, “Microflora” and “Iphyto” all three offering projects in the field of agriculture, whether animal or vegetable.

As for the “Aquatech” category, in which the various start-ups offering concepts related to hydraulics compete, three start-ups have also come out on top. Indeed, “Aquaclean”, “Smart Aquatech” and “Atralife” are demarcated.

A final challenge has been set up: “Drinks innovation”. This one concerns innovations in drinks and their ingredients and the 3 winners are: “Drink with perpose”, “Kowa drink” in second place and finally “Nutrify”.

The Minister Delegate calls for the participation of these startups in the country’s food security

Startups play a key role in a country’s economic ecosystem, and those specializing in agriculture are even more concerned given the importance of this sector in Algeria. This is why Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, the Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister in charge of the Knowledge Economy and Startups called on them to play a more important role in the country’s food security and development. invest in this direction.

Indeed, he mentioned this point this Thursday during the award ceremony of the “Foodtech startup challenge”. He recalled that the involvement of start-ups is essential in this field where the vagaries and challenges to overcome are becoming more and more numerous.

Nevertheless, the manager emphasized a very significant positive point, which is the number of companies that entered the competition, which demonstrates the diversity of the projects and the interest shown in this economic sector. Indeed, according to the figures reported by the organizer “Leancubator”, 120 startups participated in this edition.
