Mick Schumacher is out. Not only will the 23-year-old not start for Team Haas next year, the cockpits of all other Formula 1 teams have already been taken. Therefore, Schumacher’s last option is to keep warm as a reserve driver next year and hope for a cockpit for 2024.

But should that have been? Team Haas was bothered by the frequent accidents and the resulting repair costs for a long time, and Schumacher was never able to convince with two points in 43 races. Accordingly, the decision not to renew his contract is quite understandable.

But Schumacher still enjoys a good reputation in Formula 1 – both because of his talent shown in Formula 3 and Formula 2, as well as because of his name and the associated marketing potential.

Especially with the racing teams in midfield, Schumacher could have been a candidate for the second cockpit. “He deserves a place on the starting grid and not as a test driver,” says Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, for example.

Haas boss Steiner criticized for months of hesitation

Instead, Haas boss Günther Steiner took months to decide on a second driver. When Williams – and thus the last alternative for Mick – occupied his second cockpit in mid-October, Steiner was still demanding that Schumacher perform and be recommended for a new contract.

Only a few days before the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi, Steiner committed himself to Nico Hulkenberg. Mick Schumacher was suddenly without a Formula 1 future. Haas boss Steiner is now also held responsible for this.

Since then, Steiner has been criticized, especially by German Formula 1 fans. “The separation is in no way understandable for me,” racing legend Hans-Joachim Stuck recently emphasized to “Motor & Sport”.

“He doesn’t live behind the moon”: Steiner rejects criticism

In addition, many criticize the lack of public support for the pilot. “You can’t call it personnel management,” ex-F1 driver Ralf Schumacher said at “sky” clearly. “If one […] Of course, when you’re under so much pressure, you can’t drive freely.”

Steiner has now rejected the criticism of his handling of his pilot opposite “Sport Bild”.: “We haven’t played around for three months that we knew and didn’t tell him. We looked at what was best for us for a long time and took our time. That wasn’t delaying,” emphasizes Steiner.

At the same time, Schumacher should have seen it coming: “Of course he suspected something, he doesn’t live behind the moon,” Steiner explained to “Sport Bild”.
