Galaxy Book 2 Pro review: less than 900 grams and an OLED screen. What more ?

With its new Galaxy Book Pro range, Samsung intends to return in force to the ultraportable PC market. This new 13-inch model has strong arguments, starting with a weight of less than 900 grams and an OLED screen. Enough to convince?

Samsung finally returned to the laptop market in 2022, with a brand new range of Galaxy Books. Focusing on ultraportability, these laptops have strong arguments to make against fierce competition. A few weeks ago, we were testing the Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360, a very convincing ultraportable equipped with a hinge capable of tilting its screen 360 degrees.

The new model we were testing is more “classic”, because it got rid of its pivoting hinge. Goodbye, too, the touch screen, the Galaxy Book 2 Pro is a pure ultraportable under Windows 11. Its direct competitors are called Zenbook at Asus, Swift at Acer and, of course, MacBook Air at Apple. But the Galaxy Book 2 Pro has something to stand out, starting with a very impressive light weight and a beautiful OLED screen.

Design and construction: less than 900 grams, yes Madam, yes Sir

When you first unbox the Galaxy Book 2 Pro, you can’t help but be impressed by its weight. It is indeed one of the lightest ultraportables on the market, since it weighs only 868 grams. A real feat for a 13.3-inch PC, especially since the chassis gives off a real impression of solidity. The latter displays a clever mix of aluminum and plastic, for a successful result, both visually and under the fingers. The entire cover and the input area (keyboard and touchpad) benefit from a matt treatment of the most beautiful effect, which has the advantage of correctly repelling fingerprints.

The frame around the screen is quite thin, but we could probably have been a little better optimized, the fault of a wide band in the lower part. The upper part also houses a 1080p webcam.

Very compact, is the Galaxy Book 2 Pro still comfortable to use on a daily basis? The screen opens without any problem and we handle it with pleasure. The keyboard is quite confusing at first glance, as it has extremely short stroke keys. The typing sensation is initially very weak, but you get used to it quickly, especially if you are used to writing on a laptop. Note also the presence of a Windows Hello compatible fingerprint sensor, located directly under the “power” button of the PC, which allows you to unlock your session in the blink of an eye. The backlighting of the keys is done on 3 levels.

The touchpad is the most classic, but fulfills its role perfectly. Well integrated into the chassis and of good size, it offers precise gliding and very good responsiveness.

The Galaxy Book 2 Pro also achieves the feat of being ultra thin while offering fairly complete connectivity for an ultraportable. At a time when many products of this type (starting with the Galaxy Book Pro 360) ignore USB-A and HDMI ports, the Book Pro 2 includes two USB-C ports (including one Thunderbolt 4 compatible ), a USB-A 3.2 port, an HDMI output, a headphone jack and even a microSD card reader. The latter is really a great argument, offering a simple and economical way to increase storage capacity.

The Galaxy Book 2 Pro is therefore the “ideal” ultraportable as we imagine it: impressive lightness, despite everything complete connectivity, a successful keyboard and unbeatable ease of transport.

Screen: an OLED panel with superb colors

This new Samsung ultraportable opts for a 13.3-inch screen in Full HD (1920×1080) with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Classic, except that we are dealing here with an OLED panel. Excellent news, which gives hope for an “infinite” contrast ratio and colors that stand out particularly well.

In practice, this screen has very few flaws. We can just note a brilliant treatment which causes a lot of reflections, even when the brightness is pushed to the maximum. This could become annoying if you use the product outdoors.

We would still have appreciated a 90 Hz panel

For the rest, there is nothing to complain about: everything is in line with what is expected on an OLED screen of a high-end laptop PC. The maximum brightness is very good (measured at 420 cd/m2) and the contrast ratio is, unsurprisingly, not quantifiable. We will therefore be dealing with totally black “blacks” and the HDR content will only come out better.

In terms of colorimetry, again, the screen of the Galaxy Book 2 Pro impresses: the rendering is of great fidelity in addition to being very balanced. We thus note an impressive Delta E of 1.2 and a color temperature of 6860K. Remember that the Delta E represents the difference between the actual colors and the colors displayed and must be as low as possible. It is generally considered to be good below 3. The color temperature represents the balance between warm and cold hues and should be as close as possible to the standard at 6500K.

Color fidelity is therefore particularly good and it is still rare to have a Delta E below 1.5. The balance between warm hues and cold hues is also there.

A bright screen, with deep blacks and colors that are both vibrant and faithful: that’s the whole point of OLED on this Galaxy Book 2 Pro. It is ideal for working and for consuming content (movies, series, etc.)

Performance: the 12th generation Intel processor that ensures and does not heat up

2022 saw the arrival of 12th generation processors at Intel and it is no surprise that this new Galaxy Book benefits from it. We are therefore entitled to a Core i7-1260P under Alder Lake architecture. It is a CPU with 12 cores, 4 of which are dedicated to “greedy” tasks (so-called “performance” cores) and 8 cores are reserved for energy efficiency. This is a new approach for Intel, which turns out to be rather profitable on a laptop-type product, since we will have a good balance in performance and autonomy. The CPU is also not very greedy, since it consumes only 28W by default. For the graphics part, the integrated GPU (iGPU) is an Intel Iris Xe. It offers limited performance in games, but will be sufficient for less demanding titles in 720p or 1080p, at a “medium” level of detail. To this new generation processor are added 16 GB of RAM in LPDDR5 and an NVMe SSD of 512 GB or 1 TB.

Concretely, the Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 with this new Core i7 processor will be very fast on a wide variety of tasks, but will still show its limits on more demanding things, such as video editing or advanced photo editing. . The good amount of RAM and the speed of the SSD will still allow real comfort on a daily basis in 90% of uses. But, if only by its format, the Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 is above all a “luxury” office product, which offers an excellent user experience under Windows 11.

The advantage of having a low-power processor is also to be found in terms of heating and noise. The vast majority of the time, the chassis does not heat up and the PC remains completely silent. By stressing the whole thing a little (in our case with the OCCT “stress test”), the temperatures will rise and the underside of the PC will become quite hot, but at a level that remains quite acceptable, accompanied by a breath very light that you will hear only by sticking your ear to the ventilation grille located below.

Autonomy: a long day of work, and even a little more

Going to work with the Galaxy Book 2 Pro 2 in your bag and forgetting the charger? It’s not a problem, since it will largely last the day. This is certainly one of the biggest strengths of the product. Autonomy rises very easily to 12 or 13 hours by using energy saving correctly. On the video streaming side, our Netflix test with the Chrome browser ran for 10:35 hours before the battery was completely flat. Again an excellent result.

On the charging side, the PC is supplied with a 65W fast charger no bigger than that of a smartphone. It allows a full charge in just under 2h30.

Conclusion

Strong points

  • A laptop under 900 grams
  • Excellent build quality
  • Perfectly calibrated OLED display
  • Very complete connectivity for an ultraportable
  • Very good autonomy

Weak points

  • Reflections on the screen
  • Very short keyboard key travel
  • A “screen size/chassis” ratio that could have been better

Samsung’s Galaxy Book Pro 2 represents everything expected of an ultraportable in 2022: a worked chassis, a compact and versatile format, impressive lightness, good autonomy and real comfort in use. All the modern components are there (12th generation Intel CPU, OLED screen) and even a little more. We appreciate its particularly complete connectivity for a product of this category. The only slight notable defect is the fairly high level of reflections on the panel, which can make outdoor use complicated. A negative point that weighs little at the time of the balance sheet.
