Galaxy S22 vs S21: advances outweigh setbacks in Samsung’s compact top? | Comparative

The Galaxy S22 came to be the successor to the Galaxy S21 as the most compact model among the Korean top-of-the-line smartphone family. You may even find the two similar, but in practice it may not be so.

After all, in what has Samsung evolved or regressed from one generation to another, in its flagship? Let’s find out in detail now, in the TudoCelular Comparative.

Samsung Galaxy S22

The inspiration for the look of the S22 remains similar to the S21. The ends remain more rounded, but now the body is more compact and lighter. While the frame is still aluminum, the rear has evolved from last-generation plastic to frosted glass this time around.

Still talking about the construction, the new cover comes with Gorilla Glass Victus Plus protection, while the previous IP68 certification is kept in the recent model, to guarantee advanced resistance against dust and liquids.

The cameras follow in the left corner vertically, but the block no longer slides to the side, but is positioned in a separate piece. At least, the front continues with a drop-shaped notch, in addition to the ultrasonic biometric reader under the display.

Samsung insists on leaving its tops without a memory expansion slot, and it’s no different with these phones. Sixth-generation Wi-Fi and NFC support are present in both. Bluetooth has advanced from version 5.0 to the modern 5.2.

With evolutions mainly in construction and a more compact design, the Galaxy of 2022 starts the duel at the front.

Screen

To make her top even smaller, the Korean sacrificed some of the screen size, which went from 6.2 inches on the S21 to 6.1 inches on the S22, even increasing the frontal use. Still, we have Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel here, with Full HD+ resolution and HDR10+ support in streaming.

The refresh rate of 120 Hz was maintained, to give good fluidity to animations and compatible games. Only now it drops to 48 Hz, and no longer 60 Hz, in its dynamic configuration. The brightness is also stronger than the year before, mainly due to the Vision Booster feature, which improves use on sunny days.

We have a pretty satisfactory color calibration on both, apart from the change from Gorilla Glass Victus to its Plus version.

It’s another point for the newer Galaxy.

Sound

You know that phrase that says “in a team that is winning, don’t move”? Well, Samsung didn’t compromise on sound quality and kept a stereo system, with the AKG brand. This means that the two will give you a satisfying immersion and sound power high enough to have no problems in this regard.

Another important point is that we have a good balance of frequencies between bass, mids and treble here. The manufacturer did not offer a physical headphone jack, and did not ship a USB-C compatible accessory or adapter in the package.

We don’t have big differences from one generation to the next. So we give it a draw.

Different years, different software versions. The S21 comes with Android 11 and One UI 3.1 natively, while the S22 comes out of the box with Android 12 under the One UI 4.1 interface. Both are on the list of recipients with four changes to the “little robot” and five years of security packages.

In terms of mobile connectivity, the duo are 5G compatible, so speed won’t be an issue for quite some time. Likewise, the screen with a high refresh rate ensures good navigation fluidity.

When we talk about features, we have no differences from one to the other. They provide functions such as Edge Screen shortcuts, always-on display locked information and DeX mode to turn your phone into a portable PC.

In this regard, the longevity of the Galaxy S22 speaks louder and gives it the point.

Performance

For the tops of the line in 2022, Samsung decided to adopt the Qualcomm platform in Brazil and brought the S22 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. How is its performance against the S21’s Exynos 2100? From what we’ve seen in our tests, the predecessor is still nearly six seconds faster over the two rounds. Could it be a lack of optimization in the newest software, or has Samsung capped this generation’s chip?

Even in the benchmarks, we see a small advantage for the newer Galaxy on AnTuTu and it even loses to the old model on Geekbench. In games, these devices don’t look bad and they all run at maximum quality, in addition to supporting 120 fps, when games are compatible. A pity that you will have above normal heating in the S22.

For the fastest set, the Galaxy S21 scores this time.

Another sacrifice made to have a smaller body was in the drums. Now the capacity has dropped from 4,000 mAh to 3,700 mAh. How did this affect autonomy? We noticed a drop of more than three hours in total duration, with the newest in the 17-hour range.

With a smaller battery, the S22 should charge faster, right? Well, that’s not what we noticed. With the same 25 W adapter as the last generation, the current top of the line takes the same time as the S21 to reach 100%.

Thus, the Galaxy of 2021 scores in this regard without great difficulties.

camera

If there’s one point that we can highlight the S22’s advancement, it’s the camera. The set continues with three lenses as in the S21, but the sensors have evolved in general. The main one went from 12 MP to 50 MP and takes more consistent photos, with a dynamic range in measure and correct colors, not to mention the much superior night mode compared to the older Galaxy.

The images in dark places are also the highlight of the ultrawide, even if the lens itself has not changed much. They lacked an autofocus here, to serve in macro mode. But the biggest improvement is in the telephoto lens, which now has a three-times optical zoom and delivers cleaner, better color shots.

This is an easy point for the Galaxy S22.

On paper, we don’t have much of a difference between generations in videos. Both record in 8K at 24 fps with the main camera, or in 4K at 60 fps with the others. There’s optical stabilization, snappy focus, and stereo audio capture on both, too. However, the very clean quality of telephoto footage will break the tie here, in addition to more improved features in Samsung’s software.

The front camera doesn’t show great evolutions, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t improvements. Selfies are sharper and closer to reality. The portrait mode also misses less, while the night mode performs better in the records. Front-facing videos still support 4K resolution at 60 fps.

One more point for the Galaxy S22.

price

Samsung didn’t want to change the value of its compact top and kept the same R$6,000 suggested price for the Galaxy S21 for the S22. But as we talk about different years of release here, the oldest ends up being much cheaper in the current market and can be found for half the price charged by its successor.

Thus, the cost-effectiveness of the S21 gives it the last point of the Comparative.

If there’s something that this duel showed, it was that the new generation of Korean tops is far from unanimous in advances. The Galaxy S22 bets on cameras as the great asset to attract the consumer, since here we see the biggest evolution. The construction has also improved, while the display is brighter. Apart from the updated system, which will have a longer lifespan.

However, we found some very relevant questions in favor of the Galaxy S21. One of them is in the performance, which proved to be faster without heating up the cell phone in the same proportion as the successor. Another is the battery, as it has a greater capacity that makes it last longer away from the outlet. Finally, there is the cost-benefit, as you can find it for a much lower price compared to the recent model.

After all, do advances outweigh setbacks? The score is there to answer the question. But it’s always worth analyzing what your priorities are when buying a cell phone.
