After three days in Hungary, the Giro riders returned to Italy on Tuesday May 10, 2022, for the fourth stage of the 2022 edition. On the program, neither more nor less than Etna, the most important active volcano in Europe. The arrival, judged at the top, smiled on the German Lennard Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe) ahead of Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) who took the opportunity to take the leader’s pink jersey.
A little over two minutes later, the peloton of favorites showed up with a few absentees. Tom Dumoulin, Guillaume Martin and Vincenzo Nibali are among the big losers of the stage. The Frenchman had however completed a three-week internship in Sicily to prepare for these slopes. Miguel Angel Lopez was not on the finish line either after his retirement from the start of this fourth stage.
Eighth in the stage just behind Richard Carapaz who settled the sprint of the peloton, Romain Bardet took the opportunity to enter the Top 10 just over 20 seconds behind Simon Yates, fourth, and favorite currently best placed.
