Mexico City.- The head of the Ministry of Public Education (SEP), Delfina Gómez, announced a “national crusade” to rescue 512,000 students who during the last period did not return to classrooms, after confinement due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This number of students represents 1.5 percent of the total enrollment in Basic Education.
The objective, said the official at the “LIV Ordinary Plenary National Meeting of the National Council of Educational Authorities”, is that for the next school year that will begin in August, 25 million students are on the attendance list.
He explained that in Basic Education the largest number of students who did not return to classrooms is registered, especially in preschool and primary, but on the contrary, in high school, he said, 85 thousand more students were enrolled, which represented an increase of 1.7 percent in tuition.
For this, he requested support and actions from the educational authorities of the 32 entities, which were convened for this meeting.
Among the measures he mentioned is the relaxation of school control regulations, the expansion of federal scholarship programs and the improvement of school infrastructure through the Escuela es Nuestra program.
“We have detected that there are children who did not return not because they do not want to, but because they do not have the resources to face the minimum, such as the ticket or perhaps it is to bring food or material,” he explained.
Gómez asserted that the request for the extension has already been sent to the National Coordination of the Benito Juárez Welfare Scholarship Program.
“That it give us a special program for those little ones who do not return for economic reasons, that can open that space for them,” he said.
