Going on vacation: here’s what you’ll save by unplugging your box

In the majority of French households, the internet box is a must. Faithful ally, it is always connected so that you can connect to the Internet at any time of the day. Whether it’s to work, watch your current series or make a video call to your loved ones. If it is not the most energy-consuming device in your home, the internet box still consumes a lot over the year. During this summer period, we recommend that you unplug it if you go on vacation.

What your internet box consumes

Your internet box is constantly on. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Depending on the type of box and the Internet service provider, its average annual consumption varies, but it fluctuates between 150 and 300 kWh per year. In short, your internet box consumes almost as much as a refrigerator or even your washing machine over the year.

The thing is, even when you’re not using WiFi or turning on your computer or TV, the internet box continues to expend energy. In the middle of the holiday period, you therefore have every reason to turn off your box if you are away for several days. If “sleep” modes exist, they do not allow you to greatly reduce your consumption. You might as well simply turn off your modem. Not only does this allow you to save money on your electricity bill, but you are also doing a (small) gesture for the planet.

ADSL or Fiber, the consumption of your internet box depends on it. ADSL boxes consume more than their Fiber counterparts: approximately 280 kWh per year compared to a range between 150 and 300 kWh per year. In short, the consumption of your box costs you between 23.4 euros and 46.7 euros over the year, based on the EDF regulated tariff in force last February.

Depending on your ISP, the power of your box differs. Indeed, it can go from 7W at SFR to 17W at Free. Thanks to sleep mode, the power may drop. Depending on the length of your vacation away from home, the savings you will make by disconnecting your internet box will be more or less significant. You can earn a few euros, nothing very exceptional, but it’s always taken.

The equipment that consumes the most in your absence

In addition to the possibility of reducing (a little) your electricity bill, switching off your box in your absence is a good gesture for the planet. Well, there again, not enough to reverse the trend and save us from global warming. But it’s always a good thing.

In the same vein, you can also take advantage of your summer absence to unplug your fridge (provided you have emptied it before, of course), or even your hot water tank. These two devices are the most energy-intensive in your absence, and deserve all the more to be unplugged.

Going back to your internet box, of course these few euros saved are not worth the savings you can make by opting for an internet subscription that suits you and is cheaper. Indeed, internet service providers regularly offer temporary offers to allow you to browse at high speed at a lower cost. From simple to double, the prices of internet boxes vary and customers generally subscribe to formulas that include advantages that are not useful to them. We invite you to take a look at our comparison of the best internet boxes in 2022.
