Green tea keeps the intestines healthy and reduces cholesterol, glucose and triglycerides in the blood

If you suffer from high cholesterol, glucose and triglycerides in the blood or from the annoying metabolic syndrome, which can lead to diabetes and heart disease, the consumption of green tea could be beneficial as a factor that promotes intestinal health and that of the body in general.

And it is that a new investigation carried out in people with a set of risk factors for heart diseases has shown that the consumption of extract of Green Tea for four weeks can reduce blood sugar levels and improve intestinal health by reducing inflammation and reducing “leaky gut”, reports the Europa Press agency.

The researchers say this is the first study to assess whether health risks related to the disease known as metabolic syndromewhich affects one-third of Americans, may decrease thanks to the anti-inflammatory benefits of Green Tea in the intestine.

”There is a lot of evidence that increased consumption of Green Tea is associated with good levels of cholesterol, glucose Y triglyceridesbut no study has linked its benefits in the intestine with these health factors”says Richard Bruno, lead author of the study and professor of human nutrition at Ohio State University (United States).

The team conducted the clinical trial in 40 individuals as a follow-up to a 2019 study that associated lower obesity and fewer health risks in mice consuming green tea supplements with improvements in gut health.

In the new study, published in the journal Current Developments in Nutrition, the extract of Green Tea also lowered blood sugar, or glucoseand decreased intestinal inflammation and permeability in healthy people, an unexpected finding.

“What this tells us is that within a month we are able to reduce blood glucose in both people with metabolic syndrome and healthy people, and the reduction in blood glucose appears to be related to the decrease in leaky gut.” and the reduction of intestinal inflammation, regardless of health status”Bruno explains.

People with metabolic syndrome are diagnosed with at least three of the five factors that increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other health problems: excess belly fat, high blood pressure, low HDL (good) cholesterol, and elevated fasting blood glucose levels and triglycerides, a type of fat in the blood.

What’s tricky about these risk factors that make up metabolic syndrome is that they’re often only slightly altered and don’t yet require drug treatment, but they still pose a huge health risk, Bruno says.

”Most doctors initially recommend losing weight and exercise. Unfortunately, we know that most people are unable to adhere to lifestyle modifications for a variety of reasons. Our work aims to give people a new food-based tool to help control their risk of metabolic syndrome or to reverse metabolic syndrome.”

Forty participants -21 with metabolic syndrome and 19 healthy adults- consumed gummies containing extract of Green Tea rich in anti-inflammatory compounds called catechins. The daily dose was equivalent to five cups of Green Tea. In the double-blind, randomized crossover trial, all participants spent a further 28 days taking a placebo, with a month off from any supplement between treatments.

The researchers confirm that the participants, as advised, followed a diet low in polyphenols — natural antioxidants found in fruits, vegetables, teas, and spices — during the placebo and green tea extract brewing phases of the study, so that any results could be attributed to the effects of green tea alone.

The results showed that the levels of glucose in fasting blood of all participants were significantly lower after taking the extract of Green Tea compared to levels after taking the placebo. The decrease in intestinal inflammation due to treatment with Green Tea in all participants was established by an analysis that showed a reduction in pro-inflammatory proteins in fecal samples.

Using a technique to assess the proportions of sugar in urine samples, the researchers also found that with the Green Teathe permeability of the small intestine of the participants decreased favorably.

Intestinal permeability, or leaky gut, allows intestinal bacteria and related toxic compounds to enter the bloodstream, stimulating low-grade chronic inflammation.

“It is believed that this absorption of products derived from the intestine is an initiating factor of the obesity and insulin resistance, which are fundamental to all cardiometabolic disorders,” Bruno points out.

“If we can improve the integrity of the gut and reduce leaky gut, the idea is that we may be able to not only alleviate the low-grade inflammation that initiates cardiometabolic disorders, but potentially reverse them.”according to research by Richard Bruno.

”We are not trying to cure metabolic syndrome with a one-month study –specifies–, but based on what we know about the causative factors of metabolic syndrome, there is a possibility that the Green Tea act, at least in part, at the intestinal level to alleviate the risk of developing it or reverse it if you already have metabolic syndrome”indicated the researcher.
