Gunmen kidnap more than 100 people in northwestern Nigeria

More than 100 people, including Women and childrenwere kidnapped when armed men raided four villages in the state of Zamfarain the northwest of Nigeriaon Sunday, the information commissioner and residents said.

Kidnappings have become endemic in northwestern Nigeria as roving gangs of armed men seize people in villages, roads and farms and demand ransom money from relatives.

Many of them are women, children and babies.


An armed group kidnapped a hundred people in northwestern Nigeria

More than 40 people were abducted from Kanwa village in Zamfara’s Zurmi local government area, information commissioner Ibrahim Dosara and a local resident said.

Another 37 people, mostly women and children, were abducted from the Kwabre community in the same local government area, added the resident, who declined to be named for security reasons.

“Kanwa village is deserted, the bandits split into two groups and attacked the community. They kidnapped children from 14 to 16 years old and women,” said the resident.


The attack took place in several towns in the state of Zamfara

In Yankaba and Gidan Goga communities in the Maradun local government area, at least 38 people were kidnapped while working on their farms, residents said. Dosara accused the gunmen of using the abductees as human shields against military airstrikes.

Nigerian forces launched a series of air strikes on Zamfara and other warring northern states, neutralizing many insurgents and driving them from their hideouts in the region’s vast forest reserves. The country’s military has also come under fire after some of its airstrikes were found to have caused civilian deaths.
