A vehicle carrying a shipment of contraband cigarettes misled, overturned and ended up on fire yesterday morning in Salto Encantado after its driver evaded and escaped from a police checkpoint deployed on National Route 14.

After putting out the fire in the vehicle, the investigators involved found 599 bundles of foreign brand cigarettes near the place.

According to police spokesmen who intervened in the procedure, the intervention of the Misiones Police began around 3 in the morning.

Troops carrying out preventive tasks on National Route 14 observed a Ford Fiesta evading control at full speed.

From that moment, the agents notified the different agencies and carried out a lockdown operation in that town to intercept the aforementioned vehicle.

In this context, just a couple of minutes later, they found the car on 8 de Septiembre street, overturned and with flames damaging a large part of its bodywork.

The troops quickly extinguished the fire and found that a few meters away there were contraband cigarettes that the occupants of the Fiesta had abandoned at the time of their escape.

Next, they counted the merchandise and found a total of 599 bundles of foreign origin.

Finally, the car was deposited at the police station, and the cigarette boxes were made available to the Federal Court of Oberá.

While until yesterday afternoon there was no news from those responsible for the hijacked shipment.
