Helping hands: Airport chaos: Hundreds of foreign workers expected

Queues and flight cancellations due to congestion: Hundreds of helpers from abroad are helping at German airports.

In the fight against long queues and flight cancellations due to congestion at German airports, ground handling service providers are counting on hundreds of helpers from abroad. “It is realistic that 250 foreign workers will be there by mid-August,” said the chairman of the industry association ABL, Thomas Richter, to the editorial network Germany (RND/Wednesday).

They could remedy the situation at Munich, Nuremberg and Frankfurt airports. With a view to the required documents, one is in the “final stages”. However, Richter criticized bureaucratic hurdles.

Don’t forego safety standards

Due to staff shortages at airports, the federal government had created the opportunity to recruit temporary workers from third countries – mainly from Turkey. However, the assistants have to go through a reliability check.

The general manager of the airport association ADV, Ralph Beisel, told the RND that the recruitment of urgently needed personnel could be made “significantly easier without sacrificing safety standards” through a more efficient and thus shorter examination. (dpa)
