Here are the world’s most powerful video cards

The article will be updated.

On Tuesday afternoon, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang took to the stage to share the details of the upcoming RTX 4000 series of video cards.

The new generation is based on the Ada Lovelace architecture, which replaces the Ampere architecture and the RTX 3000 series.

There was a lot of speculation about the power requirement and the size of the cooler ahead of tonight’s launch, and as usual the sticking point is how much more powerful the flagship is compared to the previous generation.

Huang started with a claim that the new flagship will be anywhere from twice to four times as powerful as the RTX 3090 Ti.

Two new graphics cards

The RTX 4090 arrives on October 12 with a price tag of 1,600 dollars. According to Huang, it will be twice as powerful in Microsoft Flight Simulator compared to the RTX 3090 Ti.

The video card gets 24 GB of GDDR6X video memory.

Nvidia also launched the RTX 4080. This will be two to four times as powerful as the RTX 3080 Ti, and will come in two different versions. One version with 16 GB of video memory for 1200 dollars, and one with 12 GB for 900 dollars.

The RTX 4080 versions will arrive in November. Naturally enough, one should take this type of statement about performance with a grain of salt before there are tests of the video card.

New version of DLSS

Nvidia’s technology for upscaling, “Deep Learning Super Sampling”, also comes in a new generation.

Huang describes DLSS 3 as a big step forward for Nvidia, and points out in particular that the new technology can help in games where the processor is the bottleneck. Again they use Microsoft Flight Simulator as an example.
