Google took advantage of Google I/O 2022 to launch a new smartphone: the Pixel 6a. The device slightly evolves the design of the other Pixel 6 in a slightly more compact format (6.1″) and three colors sage, pebble and charcoal. On the photo side we have three 8 + 12.2 + 12 Mp sensors (selfie, main and ultra-wide angle). You didn’t get the Pixel 5a in France, so you’ll have its successor.
For only 459 euros – it has the same price in dollars that Google asked for the Pixel 5a – the firm offers the same hardware platform on this model as the Pixel 6. The device therefore inherits 5G with mmWave compatibility, and a very powerful Tensor chip (supported by a Titan M2 security chip), with very advanced AI and image processing capabilities.
Pixel 6a: Google makes surprisingly few compromises
The Pixel 6a’s casing is very similar to the design language of other Pixel 6s. Note, however, a thinner headband and a slight cutout around the photo sensors. The design evokes in passing that of the next Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, of which Google briefly showed images, just to give leakers a little less work.
Model “a” obliges, this Pixel 6a limits costs by leaving out some features that remain exclusive to Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. For example, the screen definition is Full HD+ and the panel offers a rather classic 60 Hz refresh rate.
Finally, we must also give up on the excellent 50 Mp sensor of the Pixel 6. The disappearance of the jack will also be a bad surprise for some. But for everything else, Google promises 5 years of security updates + 3 years of major updates. All in configuration 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage.
The Google Pixel 6a will be available for pre-order on the Google Store from July 21. The smartphone should arrive in France in stores on July 28 at a price of 459 euros.
