It is possible to export the history of its WhatsApp chats, for backup purposes. A tool is provided which sends the messages in text file format.
WhatsApp offers a handy tool for backing up your chats in the cloud, with end-to-end encryption on Google Cloud and iCloud. Convenient to properly secure your data and messages so that no one can access them in plain text. But maybe you need to make a local backup?
Good news. The application offers tools for exporting its discussions. Messages are sent by e-mail and it is possible to indicate whether it is also necessary to retrieve the files that are attached to the conversation. The chat history is in text format (.txt), which makes it easier to import it into another chat room.
Export WhatsApp chats
To recover a chat for backup purposes, you have two ways to do it.
The first method is to go to the conversation and click on the vertical ellipsis, at the top right of the screen. In the drop-down menu, choose “More”, then “Export chat”. Then choose the channel that seems appropriate to you to transfer your history. The screen will offer you e-mail, but also a selection of applications on your smartphone.
If you opt for sending by e-mail, all you have to do is fill in the recipient’s address (we imagine, yours). The subject field and the body of the message are pre-filled, but you are free to modify them. All that remains is to send. Depending on your internet connection and the extent of the history, especially if you include all chat media, this may take some time.
The other solution is practically identical: on the WhatsApp home screen, go to the vertical ellipsis, then to “Settings”. On the new screen, go to “Chats”, “Disc History.” and “Export chat”. The list of discussions will then appear, with the most frequently contacted people appearing at the top. Then select one.
What about encryption for WhatsApp chat exports?
These tools work just as well in an individual discussion, with a single recipient, as in a group conversation. Be careful however, limits may arise, due to the limits specific to the sending of emails. By including media files, it is possible to include the last 10,000 messages of a discussion. Without them, the limit increases to 40,000.
Another note: this data is exported without specific encryption. They are visible in the clear, even if they are still encrypted when sending between WhatsApp and the mail service. This is an important point to consider for your backup, as chats, while in WhatsApp, are end-to-end encrypted.
