If something was missing from this spectacular stage that Agustín Creevy is going through, it was to become the Los Pumas player with the greatest amount of presence in the history of the Argentine rugby team. The La Plata hooker, who emerged from the San Luis youth academy, completed 95 caps in last Saturday’s game against the Springboks, at Independiente’s Libertadores de América Stadium, in Avellaneda.
Creevy replaced Julián Montoya in the 64th minute of the clash against South Africa for the fifth round of the Rugby Championship. The Argentine fans literally “exploded”, when the ex-captain of Los Pumas stepped onto the playing field, since the 37-year-old from La Plata has managed to win the affection of the people for his dedication and has a special “feeling” for his way to proceed on and off the field.
At that time, Los Pumas were down on the scoreboard 22-6 and it coincided with the great reaction of the Argentine team (they got within two goals; 22-20), a historic moment for Argentine rugby occurred, since Agustín Creevy He became the player with the most caps in the Argentine national team, surpassing Nicolás Sánchez (94).
“I am really very happy. Entering the field with the number of caps I had with the team, with the situation of the match against South Africa with all our people, with my family was something very exciting for what I am experiencing in my sports career”, Agustín Creevy began by saying to which he added that “it is a beautiful dream and every time I am more surprised. It is not that I stipulated it, nor did I plan it, but that is how it happened.”
Later, Creevy stressed that “it is important to enjoy this particular moment in my career and every day that passes to be able to enjoy it to the fullest with the players, on every tour. I am doing it and I am extremely happy.”
To all this, the man from La Plata also analyzed the match between Los Pumas against the Springboks on Saturday (they fell 36 to 20) commenting that “in the first half things did not happen the way we wanted. We knew what they were looking for. They scored very easily; while in the second half we came out with a different mentality, knowing that we could put up a fight and we almost won the match”.
Finally, Creevy stressed that “these are little things that we have to polish and now go to Durban to try to win. We know the field very well, since we have won there and I think that if everything goes well during the week we can bring us a victory”. The match between Los Pumas and the Springboks will be played next Saturday and will mark the end of this Rugby Championship.
As for Agustín Creevy, he made his debut for Los Pumas on April 23, 2005 in a match against Japan. Since then, he was almost never absent from the national team until after the 2019 World Championship, coach Mario Ledesma stopped taking him into account. He had previously been in the ecumenical tournaments of New Zealand 2011 and England 2015. In June 2014, the hooker was elected captain of the Argentine National Team under the leadership of Daniel Hourcade. In that condition, he is the one who has played the most matches in history with 49 and scored three tries, all he has in the national jersey with a “record” of 13 wins and 36 losses.
After not being taken into account by Ledesma, the current head coach of Los Pumas, the Australian Michael Cheika gave Creevy a new opportunity as a result of the great season he had in London Irish, where between the English Premiership and the Challenge Cup he played 25 games and scored 18 tries. He was the Argentine player who had the most activity last year.
